Scotland’s Potato Famine continued
RETURN TO SHIABA
In the winter of 1846, the potato crop in the Hebrides, smitten by blight, turn to slime. Thousands, dependent on the crop for survival, face starvation, eviction and death. The remote township of Shiaba on the Isle of Mull suffers more than most. Catherine and her family are torn apart by hunger and disease, Catherine taking her starving children to Glasgow. In spite of unrelenting hardship, they survive, and Catherine returns to the island, a stronger and more independent woman. Her husband, who remained, has to adjust to that.
